Retinol... Explained!

You’ve probably heard about retinol, and for a good reason. It's often hailed as a hero in the
skincare world, but what exactly does it do? As an aesthetics nurse, I see first-hand the incredible
transformations that a consistent and well-planned skincare routine can create, and retinol is a cornerstone of that. Personally the most effective product I’ve introduced to my own skin care routine.
What is Retinol?
Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. When applied to the skin, it converts to retinoic acid, which is the active compound that actually works its magic. Unlike many other skincare products that only work on the surface of your skin, retinol penetrates deeper to the dermis layer.
The Science Behind the Magic
So, what happens once it gets there? Retinol can do some truly amazing things for your skin. It helps to speed up cell turnover, meaning it encourages your body to shed old, dead skin cells and replace them with new, healthy ones more quickly. This process is the key to many of its benefits. This faster cell turnover can help to:
Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: By promoting new cell growth, retinol can help to smooth out the skin's texture over time.
Even out skin tone: If you're dealing with hyperpigmentation or dark spots from sun damage or acne, retinol can help to fade them, giving you a more even and radiant complexion.
Improve acne: By unclogging pores and reducing inflammation, retinol can be a powerful tool in the fight against breakouts.
How to Use Retinol Safely
Retinol is powerful, so it's important to use it correctly to avoid irritation. My top tip is to start low and go slow. Begin with a low-concentration product a couple of times a week and gradually increase the frequency as your skin builds tolerance. You should also only use it at night, as it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Always follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen in the morning, no matter the weather.
When Will I See Results?
It can take a few weeks or even months to see significant results, but with patience and consistency, retinol can truly transform your skin.
